Casting on is one of those things that you can do in an infinite amount of ways. People normally have their preferred way of doing it and they tend to stick to it for most patterns. I like the long tail cast on because it is the only one simple enough that I can remember by heart.
This weekend I was thinking of making a simple cowl as a stash buster and I wanted to knit it... since all my cowls up until now have been crocheted. I wanted to do a K2, P2 ribbing all around, very simple, stop whenever it is long enough. I remembered to have heard of a way to do a long tail cast on that was ideal for ribbing, but I couldn't remember how to actually do it. After searching the internet for a while, I found a video that explains how to do it. For reference:
In the end I decided against such cowl due to it not being a suitable project for the yarn I was trying to use. The swatch didn't turn out the way I expected, the yarn (Soft & Shiny from Loops & Threads) was very unforgiving with my uneven stitches. I didn't like the result even when I moved to a smaller needle size, about half way through going up:
